Camino del Norte 2015

Day 5 on the Norte: Ibiri Auzoa to Ziortza

June 23, 2015
View of green mountains

Route: Ibiri Auzoa to Ziortza (Albergue Izarbide to Monasterio de Zenarruza)
Distance: 25 km (15.5 mi)
Albergue: Monastery Zenarruza
Departure: 0600
Arrival: 1600
Notes: Today we have completed just over 100 kilometers since our departure from Irún.

Saw only one other pilgrim, Jose Antonio, between start and Markina. Ran into Augustine in Markina Plaza. Several of us from last night ended up at the monastery: Klaus from Germany; Christine & —- from Germany; Augustine from Chile; Lucia from Alicante; Jose Antonio from Madrid.

Beautiful mountain trails. A pilgrim from Germany said it reminded her of Switzerland.

Some of the trails on the Norte were very muddy and rutted.

There were many beautiful pastoral scenes.

Thank you for sharing so many beautiful photos!! Wow. It really does look like Switzerland. The Norte is quite different than the Frances, isn’t it? It will be interesting to learn about the differences and similarities.

I’m glad you like the photos, Holly. Yes, it’s very different than the Francés, in many different ways.

    Hi Elissa,

Such lovely pictures! How did you find Markina? Our family had a very good Basque friend from there. He was very proud of his town, and also used to play Jai Alai (pelota vasca) They have frontones all over where it’s played and tournaments are held. He invited us to visit him, but we couldn’t make it. He passed away several years ago and I really regret that we couldn’t visit him nor his town then.

    Take care!

Hi Bonnie. I spent only about an hour in Markina before walking to the monastery outside of town where I spent the afternoon and evening.

That muddy patch on the photo, I hope that wasn’t part of the road you had to walk on.

Hey B. B Thank you. The centrifuges are wonderful. A salad spinner works for just a couple of items, lol.
